Scotland's most imposing royal strongholds both stand on pedestals of rock formed by extinct volcanoes. Each is approached by rising ground formed of sediment deposited by glaciers that flowed past them during the ice ages. Between them they preserve in stone the record of many of the most dramatic events in the nation's past. Stirling Castle has been described as the key to the kingdom, and so it proved in 1314 when King Robert the Bruce defeated the chivalry of England on the nearby field of Bannockburn. Edinburgh Castle, something of a frontier fortress after the loss of Berwick, suffered more often and witnessed more violent events. The task of guarding the nation's capital involved much battering and re-building. Stirling was a favourite residence of the Stewart King's, who embellished the castle with some of the most accomplished architecture in Europe. But it is Edinburgh that enjoys the privilege of housing the royal regalia and the national war memorial, and of welcoming the largest number of visitors to any of Scotland's castles. Dr Grimble |
From the myths and legends of Scotland's past to the
realities of today, the castles of Scotland have featured at the very centre of
its history. This video is one of a set of six, all beautifully shot on film
and each featuring two castles whose enthralling stories are told by the noted
historian, Dr Ian Grimble. |
