The two castles of Blair and Brodie stand in old Pictland. According to legend, one takes its name from the Plain of Fotla's Ford, anglicised to Blair Atholl. Fotla was the son of a Pictish king. Whether the Brodies descend from another (Brudei being a favourite royal Pictish name) is a matter of surmise. Certainly they were not among the colonists attracted later to that fertile region of Moray. When the Toiseach of an earlier age became in English parlance a Thane, Brodie of Brodie was invested with this title. To this day his descendants have sought no other, as they survived the hazards of the Jacobite era, the emergency of a spendthrift heir and the annoyance of Gordon neighbours. Their home remains a delightful private place. The Murrays of Atholl by contrast rose to a dukedom. Their great castle was the last in Britain to undergo a siege, and they are the only British subjects permitted to maintain their own private army. Castle Blair is an Aladdin's cave of historical souvenirs and palatial furnishings, Brodie Castle with its unique collection of daffodils a memorial to centuries of domestic happiness. Duke and Thane are among the exhibits that the visitor may encounter in both. Dr Grimble | |||
