The Scottish Fiddle Orchestra, formed in early 1980 by
a group of enthusiastic Scottish musicians, gave its inaugural concert that
year in the Music Hall in Aberdeen. For their 10th Anniversary Gala Concert
what more fitting surroundings could there be than that beautifully refurbished
building in the land of the Northern Lights. The title is taken from the
popular song by Mary Webb and is featured in this recording. Mary died in 1989
and her ashes are at rest in the city which she, in music, made so
famous. |

Included in the performance are many new pieces by the
Orchestra under its leader William Cook, and songs by Mary Sandeman and James
Nicol. From the traditional reels and jigs to the New World Music by the young
SFO Folk Symphony, from the sad evocative Heroes of Longhope to the stirring
strains and spiritually uplifting Highland Cathedral, featuring John McCulloch,
Mary, James and the Orchestra, this compact disc is a lasting reminder of the
splendid variety of this performance.
The Scottish Fiddle Orchestra, now
internationally popular with its guest performers and under its ebullient
conductor provide an evening to remember. |
