REVIEW: "The Kingdom Folk Band present traditional Scottish
songs as well, in simple, spare arrangements that feature prominent mandolin
and banjo. They are George Mackie on mandolin, tenor banjo, bodhran, whistles
and vocals and Alex Killin on guitar, bodhran and vocals. Their "travel light"
approach to the music shows kinship with the many itinerant singer songwriters
of the ages. Also veterans of the road, their album is entitled Restless and
features several songs about travelling around, and movin' on. The prominent
use of the banjo, and the travelin-guy motif give the album a country tinged
flavour. Indeed the title track is so similar to the Allman Brother's "Ramblin'
Man" that I had a moment of geographic confusion. I often find the mournful
wail of the instruments and the dark, stoic themes of Scottish songs to be
strongly reminiscent of Appalachian traditions, and this album highlights the
links to my ear. The album has several standouts, including the instrumental
opening, "The De'il's Awa'" followed by a nice rendition of "The Trooper and
the Maid." I also enjoyed "Rovin' Journeyman," and "Cunla" which features voice
and bodhran describing the protests of the sleeper as Cunla gets closer and
closer. This is another album that will appeal to fans of the songs of the
Scottish traditions, as well as folkies who appreciate singer songwriters."
